Maintaining a Healthy Weight is Important
for Seniors and Caregivers Alike

 

Once December is over and we enter a new year, many seniors and others resolve to lose weight, perhaps due to the extra pounds they gained while enjoying holiday meals. Losing weight is an excellent resolution, to be sure. If you're carrying extra pounds, losing just 10 percent of your body weight — or even 5 percent — may improve your blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar, all of which impact a person’s cardio vascular system.

But it’s important not to get overwhelmed or put too much pressure on yourself with your weight loss goal.
Take little steps. Work on your weight loss a little each day. Aim for a weight loss of one or two pounds a week. Small steps can lead to big results.

10 tips to add power to weight loss

  1. If you’re too busy to exercise, break exercise into 10-minute sessions throughout the day
  2. Reduce food portions gradually. Start by serving yourself 10 percent less at meals
  3. Add 5 to 10 healthy foods to your grocery list
  4. Starting a walking program? Aim to walk 10 percent longer or father each week
  5. Craving a high-calorie treat? Wait 5 to 10 minutes. The urge may pass
  6. Limit TV viewing time to less than 10 hours per week
  7. Are you a fast eater? If so, when you catch yourself eating quickly, put your fork or spoon down for 10 seconds and take a breather
  8. Walk around the block for 10 minutes after dinner
  9. Put away 10 items around the house during a commercial break to keep yourself up and moving
  10. Take at least one 10-minute active work break a day
