Senior Living: Why Wait?

When it comes to making a decision about senior living, oftentimes families are hesitant and a bit reluctant to talk about the subject with their elderly loved ones. Even if the decision to move won’t happen for a few months, however, it would be wise to not only discuss the available options as soon as possible, but also to take advantage of some of the benefits of senior living facilities early. One of those benefits is the senior living waiting list.

Why Is A Waiting List Important?

Many senior living facilities, like nursing homes, assisted or independent living facilities, have a waiting list of potential residents. Every facility is different, and space on the list is dependent on number of residents and level of care needed.

To get on a waiting list for a place is generally simple: Pay a 100 percent refundable deposit up front, and the resident's name will be added to the list. That future resident then has priority consideration for the desired accommodations, especially if they were to need a place right away should anything happen.

What does this mean? It means peace of mind, security and comfort knowing that, should your loved one suddenly come to need the services earlier than previously thought, he or she can have a place to go right away.

Cost of Senior Living: Better Now Than Later?

Senior living can be costly; many families opt for not paying a deposit and not getting on a waiting list for a senior apartment until it's absolutely necessary for their loved one to move. However, placing a deposit on a room or apartment in a senior community you all love will be money well spent to ensure that your loved one is in a safe, comfortable place once they need it. That’s important, should their situation change suddenly, or should their health suddenly decline, they will already have a place to go.
