Retiring to an independent living center is a favorite for self-sufficient seniors. This type of facility provides many amenities that put cultural, social and physical services at your fingertips. If you or a loved one is preparing to change living arrangements, it’s time to learn more about calling an independent living center home.

Difference between Independent Living and Other Senior Housing Options

If you are still living with a high degree of self-sufficiency and don’t require a high level of day-to-day help, an independent living center might be right for you. You’ll have access to many amenities, but unlike assisted living and nursing homes, you don’t have round-the-clock assistance with medications, cooking, cleaning, and personal care.

Amenities of Independent Living Centers

Each facility differs, but many provide the same types of amenities, either with all-inclusive availability or with a nominal extra fee:

  • Housekeeping
  • Meal program
  • Laundry service
  • Clubhouse
  • Library
  • Chapel
  • Game room
  • Fitness center
  • Swimming pool/spa
  • Barber/salon
  • Transportation

Types of Independent Living Centers

  • Subsidized Senior Housing: Low-income seniors have access to senior housing complexes with lower rent, thanks to government subsidizing.
  • Senior Apartments: This type of independent living center typically restricts tenant age to 55 years and older. The apartments often have many of the most sought-after amenities.
  • Retirement Communities: These are comprised of housing units that range from single-family homes and duplexes to townhouses and condos. The minimum age requirement to qualify is usually 55.
  • Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs): This comprehensive option gives residents the opportunity to enjoy independent living, assisted living or skilled nursing care all in a single community. If your current self-sufficiency wanes in the coming years, this option affords access to additional care without the need to change facilities.

Is an Independent Living Center Right for You?

First, consider your level of self-sufficiency. If you can still take care of yourself with relative ease, then consider the following questions when contemplating whether independent living might be the best solution for you:

  • Is it becoming more difficult to maintain your home and yard without help?
  • Do you rely on friends and family for transportation to and from appointments and local activities?
  • Do you wish you lived in a community with peers of a similar age who have similar interests and hobbies?
  • Does having access to exceptional on-site amenities appeal to you?

If you answer yes to all of these questions, it’s time to seriously consider independent living centers near you.
