How to Make Every Bite Count as You Age

How to Make Every Bite Count as You Age

We all know eating healthy is important. As we age, nutrition becomes more than just choosing the “right” foods. Getting older doesn't necessarily mean eating less; it means making every bite count. Our appetite, activity levels and nutritional needs change as we get older. We may need fewer calories, which means every meal becomes an opportunity give our bodies the nutrients they need. Food influences our energy, strength and ability to do the things we love.

One surprising change that happens as we get older starts with our sense of taste. Our ability to taste other flavors decreases over time and sweet foods can become more appealing, sometimes making dessert more enjoyable than a full meal. For some older adults, this can lead to eating fewer nutrient-rich foods their bodies need to stay strong.

PACE Southeast Michigan Dietitian Bob Lenning says there are more ways to have a balanced diet and get that sweet fix than one might think.

Have you tried fruit instead of ice cream?

Or a BBQ pulled pork sandwich?

What about maple sausage links?

Lenning says our love of sweet flavors doesn’t have to mean missing out on nutrition. There are many naturally sweet foods that satisfy our taste buds while also fueling our bodies.

Lenning says that healthy eating doesn’t mean giving up the foods you love. It’s about finding simple ways to add more nutrition into the meals you already enjoy.

Think of it as giving your favorite meals a healthy upgrade.

Love pasta? Add frozen vegetables or spinach into your favorite sauce for extra nutrients and flavor.

Enjoy stir fry? This is a great way to combine vegetables with protein for a balanced meal.

Love soup? Add frozen vegetables, beans or extra protein to your favorite broth-based soup to make it more nutritious and last a few days longer.

According to Lenning, small changes like these can make a big difference over time, especially when they become habits you actually enjoy.

At PACE Southeast Michigan, our care team works with participants to create personalized nutrition plans based on their needs, preferences and goals. Whether you’re managing a chronic condition, experiencing changes in appetite or simply looking for ways to stay strong as you age, our team is here to help.

After all, staying independent doesn’t start with a strict diet or a complete lifestyle overhaul. Sometimes, it starts with one small change on your plate.
