Time to Schedule Your Mammography Appointment

As part of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM), the third Friday in October is designated as National Mammography Day. This year, National Mammography Day falls on October 18. In honor of National Mammography Day, women across the country are encouraged to schedule a mammography appointment. Early detection of breast cancer through screening (mammography) saves lives.

The holiday originated in 1993 when, then President, Bill Clinton proclaimed the first National Mammography Day. According to MayoClinic.com, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force’s mammogram guidelines recommend women begin screening at age 50 and repeat the test every two years. The American Cancer Society and other organizations recommend screening begin at 40 and continue annually.

Breast Cancer

According to a report by the American Cancer Society, while death rates from breast cancer in the U.S.A. have dropped 34 percent since 1990, it is estimated that over 230,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed this year and nearly 40,000 American women will die from the disease. Men can also get breast cancer. It is estimated that 1,900 new cases of breast cancer in men will be diagnosed this year.

Mobile Mammography

For seniors who are homebound or in assisted living care, there are mobile mammography services. Ask your senior living care assistant about which mobile mammography services are in your area and for help scheduling an appointment. You can also search online on the term “mobile mammography” to locate a service near your home.
